DisCoTec: the Disability Community Technology Center

Welcome to our page!

The Disability Community Technology Center (DisCoTec) is a shared set of projects and events through Virginia Tech and University of North Carolina at Charlotte, funded by a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Our project seeks to aid in developing disabled-led technology and disability-forward technological futures through humanities-based scholarship and arts outreach. We do this through three main ventures:

What we do:

DisCoTecConsulting:

We pay teams of disabled people to come advise, ask questions, and review research in science and technology. We believe in cross-disability community – and in not being the only one in the room asking hard questions! Here’s a link to an article  about one of our test-runs. We are currently recruiting both research projects and disabled consultants.

DisCoTecArts:

An artist residency program to bring artists and creatives with an orientation toward disability justice for educational events, time to do their work, and performances. Please check our blog for announcements about events and opportunities.

Open the Gates Gaming:

A “radically inclusive gaming” group aimed at creating cognitively accessible table-top role playing materials so everyone can play! Designed with neurodivergent and disabled players at the table and in mind and in control, the resources this group is putting together will serve everyone who wants to play together.

This project is made possible through a generous Higher Learning Grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as part of the Just Dis Tech Project.
